After
graduating from Sung-Nam High School,
Composer Joopoong Kim, born in Seoul
in 1958, attended Hanyang University,
where he received his first Masters
of Music Composition degree in 1990.
In the summer of that same year,
Dr. Kim decided to continue his studies
in the United States at the University
of Missouri Kansas-City (UMKC). Majoring
in electronic music under UMKCs Dr.
Gerald Kemner, Dr. James Mobberley,
and Dr. Paul Ruddy, Dr. Kim received
his second Masters degree and a Doctoral
in music composition in December of
1998.
Dr.
Kim's final dissertation was entitled
Rally Round the Flag. This
piece was awarded many honors including
UMKC's Best Composition Award of 1998,
and also a performance at the 1st Hanminjok
Music Festival (1998). Also at
the 3rd Hanminjok Music Festival in
2000, Dr. Kim's second classical piece
Doomoolmuri was performed
after receiving special recognition
for exception composition. Since
his return to Korea in 1999, Dr. Kim
has continued to actively compose various
Configuration Music pieces, a genre
of contemporary music composition emphasized
by Dr. Kim. Dr. Kim is a member
of an electronic music organization
TROI-CA, and he also is a member of
a contemporary music organizations such
as the 21st Century Music, Vision-C,
ACL etc., through which he practices
and help develop aspects of modern music.
Currently,
Dr. Kim is a professor at Kyonggi University,
where he teaches Electronic and Digital
Music.
